KubeCon + CloudNativeCon , North America 2019

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s flagship conference gathers adopters and technologists from leading open source and cloud native communities in San Diego, North America. I happened to have a chance to be at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon , NA 2019.

This was the best experience of my life. The day when I received this news that I got selected for this  KubeCon event, I could not express my happiness in words.

To be part of this event, I have to go through the visa process. As everyone knows it’s too hard to get a visa for the USA and I feel lucky that I got it.

As I came from a small town, I have never been on a flight before. I was too excited when I was in flight though it was economy class but for me it was premium first class. (Obviously, for person who travels by ST Mahamandal, Lal gadi )

Once, I reached there the weather was so clear and sunny. Day saving light was going on there so by 4:30 PM it will be completely dark outside. San-diego convention center was 1.2 miles away from my hotel. So, I decided to walk. Roads were very clean and the air was clean. You will find very few people on the road. As Indians, we have a habit of seeing people on face but  will definitely miss people around when you will be in San-Diego.  I am so impressed with the direction on the road. It’s very clear, clean and specific.

Cloud Native Security Day hosted by CNCF schedule at 7 AM with registration until 4:30 PM followed by a Welcome party and lightning talk at San Diego convention center.

When I was standing in queue for registration, I saw many people wearing id card holder lanyards with a Red Hat logo printed on it. I thought that these people were from Red Hat but later I got to know that lanyard was  printed with the Red Hat logo because Red Hat was a Diamond sponsor for that event. It was a really proud moment for me whenever I was introducing myself to people that I am from Red Hat.

After the registration conference started officially. The entire week chock full of keynotes, breakout sessions, lightning talks, and tutorials.

KubeCon + CloudNativeCon doesn’t have “one” keynote; it uses a series of shorter keynotes by various speakers.  There is a great feeling to be part of such a big event.

Here are some Major highlights from KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2019:

1. CodeReady Workspaces 2

Red Hat announced the release of Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces 2 at Kubecon.  CodeReady Workspaces facilitates the development of container-native, Kubernetes-based applications by empowering developers to leverage an updated user interface and VSCode extensions, in addition to enriched functionality for sharing development workspaces. The latest release of CodeReady Workspaces enables developers to create and build applications and services in an environment that mirrors that of production environments running on Red Hat OpenShift.

It includes several new tools and services, like:

  • Air-gapped installs, which enable CodeReady Workspaces to be downloaded, scanned and moved into more secure environments when access to the public internet is limited or unavailable. It doesn’t “call back” to public internet services.
  • An updated user interface, bringing an improved desktop-like experience to developers.
  • Support for VSCode extensions, giving developers access to thousands of IDE extensions.
  • Devfile, a sharable workspace configuration that specifies everything a developer needs to work, including repositories, runtimes, build tools and IDE plugins, and is stored and versioned with the code in Git.
  • Production consistent containers for developers, which clones the sources in where needed and adds development tools (such as debuggers, language servers, unit test tools, build tools) as sidecar containers so that the running application container mirrors production.       “Red Hat is working to make developing in cloud native environments easier offering the features developers need without requiring deep container knowledge. Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces 2 is well-suited for security-sensitive environments and those organizations that work with consultants and offshore development teams.”  BRAD MICKLEA VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPER TOOLS, DEVELOPER PROGRAMS, AND ADVOCACY, RED HAT

2. keep kubernetes caffeinated

Erin Boyd who is currently Senior Principal Engineer for Red Hat working in the CTO Office says “Today, we have a whole host of amazing coffee makers that can take a pod of coffee, brew it, deploy it into your cup, add the milk and sweetener, and deliver it just how you like it. In the same way, Kubernetes Operators are taking the complexity out of producing, deploying, and operating applications. One particular example of where Operators are making a big impact is Storage. Storage features in Kubernetes are evolving to solving more complex problems such as data replication and support for object storage. Come and see how the Rook project is extending these storage capabilities to deliver your applications—just like your favorite cup of coffee. “

3. Helm 3

Helm is the package manager for Kubernetes and it helps to manage Kubernetes applications.  Helm 3 is launched and it announced at Kubecon 2019, CA.

4. O’Reilly Acquires Katacoda

Katacoda is an interactive learning and training platform for software developers.  One of the highlight of kubecone 2019 was O’Reilly Acquires Katacoda.

5.  General availability of Managed Istio on IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service

Istio on IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service is offered as a managed add-on, so IBM Cloud automatically keeps all your Istio components up-to-date.  At Kubecon 2019, IBM announced that the Managed Istio on IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service is generally available.

On the last day of the conference,  we had all attendee party. It was best experience to be a part of such big event. Around 12000 people attended this  conference.  An opensource event like this helped me in my personal growth and will allow me to spread and create the awareness in the community here.  The group of community doesn’t know much about such community gatherings and events and now I have chance to be a voice of such open source events.
